2012/2013 GERMANY - SOUTH AFRICA YEAR OF SCIENCE OPENING SESSION
INVITATION TO THE 2012/2013 GERMANY – SOUTH AFRICA YEAR OF SCIENCE OPENING SESSION IN CAPE TOWN, 16-17 APRIL 2012
South Africa and Germany enjoy formal research and development cooperation since entering into a bilateral science and technology agreement in 1996. In the fifteen years since then, this cooperation has grown and deepened to the point we have jointly agreed to initiate a “Germany-South Africa Year of Science” (YoS), which will be implemented under the theme “Enhancing Science Partnerships for Innovation and Sustainable Development“, beginning in April 2012.
The YoS will be launched on 16-17 April in Cape Town by Ministers Naledi Pandor and Annette Schavan, the opening event entailing science and technology exhibitions, as well as a two-day astronomy symposium entitled “Innovating the Future, Reaching for the Stars“. Apart from a focus on cooperation in astronomy, which is the single biggest contributor to South Africa-German co-publications, priority themes to be covered during the YoS include climate change, human capital development, bio-economy, urbanisation, astronomy, humanities and social sciences and health innovation.
The opening event will offer excellent opportunities to meet and network with German science experts in various research, science and technology fields, including the priority areas outlined above.
The Department would very much welcome your attendance at the launch and opening of the Germany-South Africa Year of Science on 16 April 2012 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. We hope that you will be able to join us for this unique opportunity to strengthen the role of science and technology in our collaboration with Germany. A programme will be sent to you in due course.
